The senator representing the largest senatorial district in Nigeria in terms of population and chairman of Senate Committee on Local Content, Senator Solomon Adeola Yayi (APC, Lagos West) has stated that the adoption of direct primary as the mode of election of candidates for the 2019 General elections reflects the strength of All Progressives Congress, APC over other political parties as it acknowledged the role of the people in the democratic process
Speaking at the end of the APC National Convention to ratified the direct primary election of President Mohammed Buhari as the candidate of the party, Senator Adeola thanked his constituents and party faithful for openly and overwhelmingly giving him a second term ticket for the contest to represent the district in a direct primary that saw him scoring 378,906 over his closest rival 1,179 adding that the exercise of direct primary is a positive development for our nascent democracy in terms transparency and the involvement of the people directly in the democratic process of election of leaders.
“Without mincing words, APC took a major populist step in adoption of the direct primary mode of election for aspirants at the federal level and in most states of the federation. No doubt this will have positive effects on the general election in favour of the party as the people that voted in the primary will have a sense of belonging and forms the foundation of the party’s voters” he stated.
Senator Adeola said that he is working towards a one million votes target from his senatorial district for APC in the general elections of 2019 adding that this is achievable from the district of over 12 million people.
“As can be seen from my primary election to represent the district, almost 400,000 card carrying APC members came out to exercise their right in the true sense of internal democracy, it is very conceivable and practical for us to achieve one million votes for APC in Lagos West Senatorial district with other voters that are not in political parties” he stated.
Senator Adeola promise to continue effective representation for his constituents in the Red Chamber stressing that he will never take the mandate of the people won through direct primary and general election for granted.
